Back in the year 2003, the famed producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has a film in mind that revolves around a military base with advanced technology. Then, the chief executive officer, Brian Goldner of Hasbro, which is a toy company in America called Bonaventura to base the movie on the toy line, GI Joe. The two spent about three months working on a story line and when they finally formed one, they thought that Michael Gordon was the perfect screenwriter for the film. He was the talented writer behind the movie 300.

Then in February of 2005, Gordon’s draft was rewritten by David Elliot and Paul Lovett who were the writers in the movie Four Brothers. Again, the script was rewritten around March of 2007 by Skip Woods. This was leaked online and there were negative reviews for the script so Bonaventura again asked for another scriptwriter to rewrite the script and hoped that they will be able to get it right this time around. He admitted that they had some problems with the Cobra organization but still, he promised that they would include them in the script.

In August 2007, Stephen Sommers was selected by Paramount Pictures to direct the upcoming GI Joe film. He said that he was inspired to create the movie when he visited the headquarters of Hasbro, which is situated in Rhode Island. Don Murphy and Bonaventura have already worked together in the first Transformers movie back in 2007 and they were enthused by the success of the film so they perceive that the new GI Joe movie will again be a blockbuster hit in the box office. Another scriptwriter, Stuart Beattie, was hired and the creator of GI Joe, who was Larry Hama, became the creative consultant for the film. He’s a big fan of the cartoon series and he used to watch GI Joe online (the cartoon series).

On February 11, 2008, the film went to Los Angeles, California so that they can start the filming. The movie was set to ten years in the future and the actors that played the GI Joe characters were scanned for the toy line. They will be released by July this year, which will feature 3 and ¾ inches of action figures. The movie is given the title GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra because it focuses on the Cobra Organization.

During the past decades, four decades to be exact, the GI Joe characters as toys already established itself a position in the market. Tatum did not want to take part with it because he thought that it was about a war film. However, when he read the script he found out that it was more like a fantasy movie similar to other popular ones such as X-Men and Mission Impossible. Dennis Quaid played General Clayton Abernathy or Hawk, who was the team leader. He was actually going to appear in a few scenes but the filmmakers liked his role and the way he portrayed it so they rearranged the film. They gave him 10-15 more scenes and he has recently signed to do two more sequels for the movie.

Rachel Nichols is Shana O’Hara or Scarlett, who is the intelligence expert of the GI Joe team who do not understand why men are attracted to her. Meanwhile, Nichols met a little accident while filming a sequence that is action packed. Ray Park, on the other hand, plays a mute ninja named Snake Eyes. He is suited for the role since he is an expert in martial arts like his character. To make his part more effective, he practiced wushu as well as the poses of the character in the original comic books. He wears a very heavy costume and he had to put in extra effort so that he can move around freely.

One of the men who has a crush on O’Hara or Scarlett is Wallace Weems or Ripcord. This is played by the comedian Marlon Wayans who is an enthusiast of the franchise. He was chosen for the role because of his brilliant performance in his flick the Requiem for a Dream. Being an established funnyman, you will see that he can actually play a serious role and still be humorous in the film.
